For employers who have been unable to recruit Canadian citizens or permanent residents for job openings, the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) makes it possible to hire workers from abroad. While most temporary foreign workers will be hired to address a specific, short-term labour need, some temporary foreign workers who initially came to fill a temporary vacancy can transition to permanent residence if they meet certain requirements.

On March 29, 2014, Margelyn Canales came to Canada to fill that labour need with the dream of one day becoming a permanent resident. Margelyn originally worked as a cashier and when her work permit was about to expire had questions about what would happen next. She went to the office of Immigration Consultant Carl Benito to clarify her confusion. On January 13, 2016, she asked for assistance in applying for an open work permit for her spouse, Jay-Ar Cabrera, and a study permit for herself. The application was completed and sent to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) on February 10, 2016. The couple received approval on March 17, 2016.

Margelyn describes the feeling as unbelievable at first, that it cleared a headache she could not lose. Margelyn can now rest easy as she is now one step closer to completing her dream of becoming a permanent resident of Canada.
